The Olivia Maxwell Radio Salon

The Olivia Maxwell Radio Salon (2011–2012), broadcast across Vietnam. Bold, wide-ranging conversation with cultural figures—including a two-part interview with Peter Fonda. The show aired Sunday nights on VNDC Radio—“Vietnam Washington, D.C. Radio”—over WBIG FM 100.3 HD-2. It was also simulcast and archived on oliviaradiosalon.com.

That history carries an unexpected resonance: years later, Olivia would direct Gene of NAM, her film about the wreckage of the Vietnam War from women’s perspectives.

Originally presented as Macbeth Unhinged, the film was retitled Curse of the Macbeths. Olivia plays Witch 1 in Angus Macfadyen’s directorial debut, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2016. Produced by VCUarts and the Virginia Film Office, the modern retelling sets Shakespeare’s tragedy inside a stretch limousine prowling derelict streets.

Macfadyen was so impressed by Olivia’s acting that he gave her all of the witches’ lines.

Rory Mallon, Olivia’s boyfriend at the time, was an actor she knew from Gods and Generals, directed by her father, Ron Maxwell. 02 / Official biography

About Olivia.

Born in London and raised in New York, Olivia followed instinct across acting, athletics, music, broadcasting and independent creative life.

In her own words Official biography

Olivia Anne Maxwell is the daughter of Lydia Sopoliga, a talented painter from Slovakia. Her father, Ron Maxwell, directed Gettysburg and the cult hit film Little Darlings. On her father’s side, Olivia’s grandmother was Tunisian French—a warm thread of French and North African heritage that lives on in Olivia, who speaks fluent French. Olivia grew up in New York City, attending The Hewitt School after her parents’ custody battle and long-enduring divorce.

Olivia graduated from Berkshire School in 1990 as a four-year student, excelling in cross-country running, skiing, and track and field. Olivia was a trifecta and won the MVP award in all three sports in each consecutive year. She went on to Bennington College and Marymount Manhattan University.

She lost interest in school and became a set production assistant on her father’s film Gettysburg. She was cast as the Taneytown Girl and is famous for having the only female line in the film. Olivia lived in Los Angeles as an actress but was disenchanted with the “scene.” She moved to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, in 1998 and learned to play guitar and write songs.

The Swan Pond Sessions will be available soon. Terry Tucker was of Sunforest, London’s hit band of the ’60s and ’70s, who made the Rolling Stone top 100 list. Tucker wrote “Overture to the Sun” and part of “Lighthouse Keeper” for the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Kubrick sought her out personally and called her on the phone in London. Olivia spent a day in a Woodstock, New York, recording studio with Levon Helm, who played on “Sara James”—a song Olivia wrote about a ghost she felt during the time she spent trekking through Civil War battlefields with her father and brother as a child.

She released her EP Paso Robles in 2013, produced by Eric Ambel.

An early eye for art.

In her senior year at Berkshire School, Olivia wrote a vivid response to Nancy Grossman’s sculpture Ninja (1977–1980), pairing close observation with the expressive voice that would later move through her songs, radio work and films.

Her War Too

“About a woman, a war and a patriot.”

A one-woman production: Producer · Director · Director of Photography · Editor · Writer · Costume Designer · Set Designer · Archivist · Researcher.

Olivia Anne Maxwell’s directorial debut stars Olivia Maxwell and Justin Lazard. It features one of the last appearances of Peter Fonda: an excerpt from Olivia’s interview with him, recorded before his passing, in which he speaks about Vietnam and being arrested. The film also features Tamerlane Phillips’ song “Shanghai Lily.”

“No Budget shot on an iPhone — produced, directed, acted, edited, written and filmed entirely by (me).”

“I wanted freedom of expression not having to rely on MONEY.”

Olivia holds the camera herself while appearing in the scenes. In her own words, the film considers “the wreckage of the Vietnam war post war through the women’s perspective.” As a director, she studied shot composition and setup through the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, Stanley Kubrick, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Wim Wenders—including Paris, Texas—Ang Lee, and Ingmar Bergman, especially Wild Strawberries. Richard Lester’s Petulia (1968) is a major influence, and the entire 1960s decade holds deep personal significance for her. Her thematic research encompasses the Vietnam War and the McNamara fallacy—the error of measuring what can be counted while ignoring what actually matters.

04 / Press & recognition

Seen, heard, remembered.

A few moments from the record—across music, culture and conversation.

“One Closes, Another Opens”

Alan Merrill—of the Arrows and writer of “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”—reviewed Olivia Maxwell’s late-December 2006 double-bill show with Brett Smiley at The Living Room in downtown New York City.

“Olivia writes songs in a sort of Graham Parsons vein, creating lovely landscapes of the American continent. You can visualize her detailed scenes as she sings them.”

“She is a real treat in an acoustic setting, backed by two guitarists and no rhythm section. There were three guitars on stage. It's a very naked and revealing setting, and it suits her songs perfectly.”

“A startlingly pretty girl, she shines on stage like a diamond. The young lady plays guitar herself and writes the songs, all delivered with a sensitive vulnerabilty.”

“I know she was nervous before the show because she told me so right before she went on. When she got on stage she seemed very comfortable and glanced at me (I was in the front row) and smiled as if to let me know she had settled in.”

Alan Merrill · The Arrows · Writer of “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” · January 6, 2007

“Actress Olivia Maxwell Re-Enters the Entertainment Scene”

“Stunning actress, singer / songwriter Olivia Maxwell, daughter of renowned film director Ronald F. Maxwell is re-igniting her career with an energetic burst back onto the scene.” The release traces Olivia’s collaborations with Rob Fraboni, Frankie Gavin, Ger Kiely, Tamerlane Phillips, Naill Lawlor, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Jack Smead and Levon Helm; and her roles in The Notorious #9, President, Gettysburg and Johnny X Rook’s The Monarch of Eveningtime.

Reviewing the EP, David Malachowski compared Olivia’s writing to Townes Van Zandt—a resonant touchstone for her spare, haunted Americana.

“SOUND ADVICE: Olivia Maxwell’s ‘Paso Robles’ impressive”

“Maxwell’s wispy voice evokes a wide range of emotions, like wanderlust in the expansive ‘Luce,’ melancholy in ‘Krista,’ and abject loneliness in ‘Mesas Rising.’” Reviewing the digital-only Paso Robles EP produced by Eric Ambel, Malachowski calls “Sara James,” featuring Levon Helm and the Barn Burners, “a majestic cross of western and Celtic sounds,” and closes: “Maxwell has an unfiltered worldview, innocent yet wise, pure and easy.”

“Olivia Maxwell is a remarkable singer, songwriter, actress, and radio host – among many other talents – and her new 5-song EP Paso Robles brings us some of her strongest, most diverse acoustic, Americana, folk and country-flavored music yet.”

“There’s hope for music after all”

“But every once in awhile, we come across a Saturn’s Her Card, a strange and wonderful EP recorded in Ireland by the American singer and songwriter Olivia Maxwell.... we find something we haven’t seen in a long, long time: We find important music.”

“It gives an excellent glimpse of the artist at this stage, much like Joni Mitchell’s Blue songs did, or Stevie Nicks’s early solo projects.”

Phil Sweetland · Review of Saturn’s Her Card

“Best Live Music Act of 2006”

“Olivia Maxwell paints a vivid picture with words and melody. Her songs would make great novels, the kind you never want to put down.... For me her voice brought to mind Emmylou Harris, if Emmylou was singing songs written by Townes Van Zandt. Yes, she’s that good.”
